Togo is about the size of the state of Rhode Island, yet it is home to over
6 million people. We have 2 seasons-- rainy and dry.
75% of the population in Togo are young people. You are considered
"youth" until you get married.
A dowry is paid by the groom in order to secure his bride. The groom also
is responsible for all wedding expenses.
Many people practice fetish worship -- if someone gets sick or
dies, many go to a fetish priest who will do ceremonies to "find
out" who is responsible. Many have pots or idols in which they put
all of their faith. If something happens to the fetish or idol, they
believe they will lose their life.
When someone comes to Christ and realizes that their life is not in a
pot or in idols or ceremonies, we have a fetish burning where all
items that they have put their faith in will be burned testifying that
their trust is no longer in these things, but in JESUS alone.
